President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the construction of a new domestic airport at Vihafaru, near Velidhoo in N. Atoll, will commence early next year.
The announcement was made during a visit to Hulhudhoo island, where the President met with residents as part of his tour across the atoll. He emphasised that the airport would significantly benefit the islands of Hulhudhoo, Velidhoo, and Foddhoo, in addition to nearby resorts, by boosting connectivity and creating new economic opportunities.
The President stated that the airport is crucial for economic activity expansion in the atoll, adding that it is a presidential pledge to enhance infrastructure and tourism in the atoll.
President Dr Muizzu highlighted that the government had already issued Special Economic Zone (SEZ) permits for a township project in the region, adding that several large-scale development initiatives are underway or in the pipeline.
In addition, the President confirmed that work will continue to expand Maafaru Airport, including the construction of a new terminal and the establishment of a hotel on-site to accommodate travellers. These improvements aim to strengthen the atoll’s overall aviation capacity.
