Minister Dr Abdulla Muththalib has said the government is working to cancel its agreement with Sri Lankan company Capital Marine and Civil Construction Company (CMCC) for the Giraavarufalhu and Hulhumalé Phase 3 land reclamation projects.

Speaking at the ‘Ahaa’ public forum, Minister Dr Muththalib said the case has been sent to the Attorney General’s Office for cancellation after CMCC failed to carry out the work despite receiving large advance payments, USD 20 million under the previous government and another USD 15 million from the current administration.

The deal was made through a state-owned company, Maldives Fund Management Corporation, not directly with the government. Minister Dr Muththalib warned that improper cancellation could result in major financial losses if taken to arbitration, so the process must follow legal steps.

He added that the government is reviewing the land use plan and is ready to hand over plots from the available 60 hectares if those promised land under the Giraavarufalhu project agree to it.
