President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has sent a letter to the People's Majlis requesting an extension of the Children's Ombudsperson's term for an additional five years.
The Deputy Speaker of the Majlis, Ahmed Nazim, who was presiding over today's session, read out the President's letter to the parliament floor.
In the letter, the President has requested the Majlis to decide on extending the term of Niumath Shafeeg, the current Children's Ombudsperson, for another five years.
The parliament floor has forwarded this matter to the Human Rights and Gender Committee for review.
The position of Children's Ombudsperson was created under the Child Rights Protection Act, which was passed by the parliament in 2019.
Niumath was appointed as the Children's Ombudsperson on July 23, 2020. Her five-year term is set to expire on the 23rd of this month.
