The Fatwa Majlis has ruled that the Maldives Hajj Corporation (MHCC) must pay zakat from the funds collected from the public for pilgrimage purposes. The decision follows a complaint submitted to the council regarding whether zakat should be paid on these funds.
To address the issue, the council reviewed information provided by the Hajj Corporation and concluded that zakat is indeed obligatory on the amounts paid by individuals to the corporation for performing Hajj.
The Hajj Corporation currently charges MVR 69,965 per person for pilgrimage services, with payment options available in instalments. A significant number of individuals have already made payments and are in the queue to perform the pilgrimage through the corporation.
