The Local Government Authority (LGA) has decided to publish inquiry reports on issues related to councils.
While LGA has decided to make their inquiry reports public, last month they suspended Thinadhoo City Mayor Saud Ali and Deputy Mayor Nasrullah Ali for one month after investigating an issue with the Thinadhoo City Council.
Claiming that LGA acted against the Decentralization Act and other laws in their investigation, and that the measures were taken outside of proper procedures due to political influence, Saud and Nasrullah filed a case with the Civil Court last Sunday.
LGA President and Local Government Minister Adam Shareef posted on X (formerly Twitter) today, stating that LGA has decided to publish summary reports of council inquiries in the future.
"The aim is to increase LGA's transparency, facilitate accountability and responsibility of councils, and promote good governance principles," the Minister said.
A report released by LGA on the 25th of last month stated that the Thinadhoo Council inquiry was conducted to investigate 19 issues related to the council.
The inquiry involved taking statements from council members and staff, and analyzing documents. After the inquiry, LGA stated that in addition to suspending the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Thinadhoo, action would be taken against some other council members as well.
