Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has announced the temporary overnight closure of the main access road to Velana International Airport (VIA) to carry out essential repair work ahead of the opening of the airport’s new terminal on 26 July.

According to MACL, the roadworks, which involve levelling and resurfacing, will be conducted in four phases from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. daily until 7 July. The maintenance is part of the company’s broader efforts to enhance infrastructure and improve accessibility around the airport area.

To ensure safety and minimise disruption, MACL stated that estate security personnel will be deployed to manage traffic flow and guide commuters. Warning signs, road markings, and barriers will also be installed to inform the public of the restricted access during work hours.

While the road will be closed to regular traffic during the scheduled maintenance periods, MACL confirmed that one-way traffic will still be permitted for wagons.

"We apologise for the inconvenience and appreciate the public’s understanding," MACL said, adding that the safety and security of all airport users remain their top priority.
