President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has ordered immediate strong measures to improve the condition of the Thalassemia Center.
Dissatisfied with the services provided by the Thalassemia Center, blood transfusion patients and their guardians protested in front of the center last night, calling for the resignation of the center's management.
In response, the President visited the Thalassemia Center this morning, met with senior officials and patients present at the time, and in a video released afterwards, he said that he was unaware that the condition of the Thalassemia Center had not improved and that logs show these concerns had been brought to various government officials.
"I was unaware that things remained this way and that no progress had been made even up to this point. However, those involved in Thalassemia issues have certainly met with various government parties. I know that over the past year or so, they have met with different officials two or three times and shared information, as I saw when I checked the documents today. However, it hasn't been put into practice," the President said.
The President said he has given instructions to find an immediate solution to the difficulties faced by the Thalassemia Center patients. He noted that the center is operating without a Director General and said he has ordered this issue to be resolved as well. He also said he has instructed for the center's operations to be carried out as a hospital.
"We have discussed and paved the way for increasing working hours and days like in a hospital, for example, like how IGMH operates, increasing the necessary human resources, and I have instructed how to proceed with all these matters," the President said.
The President said he has also given instructions to find additional nurses for the Thalassemia Center, acquire more equipment for the laboratory, and find a senior physician, and has set a timeline for these tasks.
"God willing, in the future, I will personally oversee the resolution of issues faced by Thalassemia children," the President said.
The President further stated that he will ensure that no issue remains unresolved due to lack of funds, and that the construction of the Thalassemia Center in Hulhumalé will bring significant solutions.
