An inmate serving a sentence in Maafushi Prison has died.

Ibrahim Shamweel (23 years) from Four Flower, Maradhoo, Addu City, died in Maafushi Prison this evening.

Maldives Correctional Service said that Shamweel was taken to Maafushi Hospital at around 4:20 PM today, and the doctor declared him dead at 4:55 PM.

Shamweel was serving a sentence of one year and six months for the crime of threatening to cause harm to a person's life and potentially carrying out such an act.

Corrections said that following Shamweel's death, the service immediately informed the police, his family, the Inspector of Correctional Service, the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM), and the National Integrity Commission.
