Authorities have seized the mobile phone of former Immigration Controller Mohamed Shamaan Waheed's wife, as part of an investigation into allegations of misuse of office and undue benefits from migrant workers. The seizure was carried out following a court order.
Shamaan was arrested yesterday and remanded in police custody for 15 days. Three other immigration officials were also detained, with two ordered to remain in custody for 10 days and one for three days.
The police allege that Shaaman facilitated the release of a foreigner caught with a large sum of money and extorted MVR 530,000 from him. Additionally, travel restrictions have been imposed on two individuals linked to the case, though their identities remain undisclosed.
