President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has declared today a government holiday due to heavy rain and flooding in some areas.

It has been raining continuously in Male' since sunset yesterday. As a result, many roads, including major roads in Male', have been severely flooded.

The President's Office Spokesperson Heena Waleed posted on X that due to continuous heavy rain and flooding in some areas, causing difficulties and hardships for many citizens, the President has declared March 2nd (today) a holiday.

In response to the flooding in Male', the military has been working on draining water and placing sandbags in some areas.

MNDF said last night that they are working with 13 pumps in five areas of Male' to drain water. MNDF also said that soldiers are active in some other islands as well.

The Maldives Meteorological Service has issued an orange alert for a large area of the Maldives from 9:45 PM last night. The most recent orange alert was issued for islands from B. Atoll to Dh. Atoll, from 3:00 AM to 7:00 AM.

The Met Office predicts that these areas will experience heavy rain with thunder and flooding.
