President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has approved the appointment of Abdulla Nashid to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), replacing Ahmed Nashid as the Vice President of the commission.
Ahmed Nashid and Abdulla Nashid were both initially appointed to the ACC by the President on 26 January 2019. However, in a recent development, President Dr Muizzu sent a letter to the Speaker of Parliament, Abdul Raheem Abdulla, requesting approval to replace Ahmed Nashid as the Vice President of the ACC. The letter did not specify the reason for this change.
Parliament reviewed the request and approved Abdulla Nashid for the position with 69 votes in favour out of the 81 lawmakers present at the meeting.
The decision marks a significant shift in the leadership of the ACC, though the reasoning behind the replacement remains undisclosed. The newly appointed vice president, Abdulla Nashid, is expected to take on his responsibilities immediately as part of the commission’s ongoing efforts to combat corruption in the Maldives.
