A Nigerian man detained at Maafushi Prison passed away suddenly today, authorities have confirmed.

The deceased has been identified as 35-year-old Emmanuel Jonpol Okonachi, who was on trial for drug possession, use, and trafficking in the Maldives.

According to the Maldives Correctional Service, Okonachi was immediately taken to the Maafushi Prison Medical Centre after his condition worsened. He was then rushed to Maafushi Hospital within four minutes but was declared dead on arrival at 5:20 pm.

Authorities stated that Okonachi had no known chronic illnesses. Further details regarding the cause of death have not been disclosed.
