President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that a special project to ensure food security in the Maldives will be launched this year.

Speaking in his Presidential Address to Parliament, he emphasised his commitment to modernising Maldivian agriculture, just as the country has modernised its fisheries sector. The goal is to make agriculture a key part of the Maldivian economy.

"A special project will be launched this year to ensure that key local produce is available for food security. The project will be completed by 2028 and will contribute to the country’s economy," President Dr Muizzu stated.

As part of the government's efforts, a Special Economic Zone for Agriculture will be developed. In 2024, the Maldives Industrial Development Free Zone (MID) signed an agreement with China Harbour Engineering Company Limited to establish an Agriculture Economic Zone (AEZ) in the Maldives. Under this agreement, 200 hectares of land in Uthuru Thilafalhu will be reclaimed for agricultural use.
