Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) recorded its highest-ever fish weighing last month, a significant milestone in its 28-year history.

According to MIFCO's latest data, the company collected 8,324 metric tonnes of fish in January 2024—the highest since its establishment in 1997. As a result, MIFCO disbursed MVR 117 million to fishermen for their catch, a 122 percent increase compared to the previous month.

The company has been ensuring that payments to fishermen are made within 48 hours, as per the commitment of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.

The government has also taken several measures to enhance MIFCO’s operations, including capacity expansion and appointing foreign executives to improve efficiency. These efforts aim to strengthen the company and support the local fishing industry.
