The foundation stone for a fisheries complex in HA Ihavandhoo has been laid, the project valued at MVR 474 million.
Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam officiated the ceremony. The project, funded by the Islamic Development Bank in partnership with MIFCO, will include 1,000 tonnes of cold storage, a 50-ton brine freezing facility, an office building, an engine and vehicle workshop, and a warehouse.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu stated that MVR 416 million is allocated for the complex, while MVR 58 million will fund the port. Administrative and technical work will begin first, with construction starting in May. The project is expected to take 18 months, but some facilities will be ready earlier.
Once completed, the complex is expected to create 150 jobs and help fishermen reduce travel costs by providing essential resources locally. This fulfils a presidential promise to support the fishing community.
