The Maldives Reform Movement (MRM), founded by former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, has been officially dissolved.
The Election Commission (EC) announced the decision in a gazette notification, stating that MRM failed to meet the required 3,000-member threshold under the Political Parties Act. The party has been removed from the EC’s list of active political parties.
MRM was registered on November 20, 2019, and faced dissolution proceedings starting in August 2023. Despite attempts to increase membership, the party fell short, leading to its dissolution on May 24, 2023. Civil court ruling later overturned the EC’s decision, citing procedural violations, and ordered the EC to pay MRM MVR 500,000 in trial costs.
Although the EC initially planned to appeal the ruling, it did not approach the High Court.
