Former Member of Parliament for Maafannu North constituency, Imthiyaz Fahmy (Inthi), has been elected as the President of The Democrats for the vacant position.

The position of President of The Democrats became vacant after the previous president, former MP for Henveiru West constituency Hassan Latheef, resigned to join the MDP.

Along with Hassan Latheef, the Deputy President of Democrats, Mohamed Shifaz, also resigned to join MDP, leaving the Deputy President position vacant as well.

Only one candidate contested for each position of President and Deputy President of Democrats. While Inthi ran for the President's position, former MP for Inguraidhoo constituency Mohamed Waheed (Wadde) contested for the Deputy President's position.

Inthi was elected as the President and Wadde as the Deputy President of Democrats at the National Assembly of Democrats held tonight. The Democrats have three Deputy Presidents, with Wadde joining former MP for Madaveli constituency Hussain Firushaan and Aishath Alyka Adnan in these positions.

Among those who left Democrats to join MDP are Hassan Latheef, Shifaz, former MDP PG Leader Ali Azim, and former STO MD Hussain Amru.
