Prosecutor General Abbas Shareef has instructed the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to speed up its investigations following complaints about delays.

The PG Office noted that delays in criminal investigations and recovering funds lost to corruption are affecting public interests. Using his constitutional powers under Article 223 (f) and (l), the Prosecutor General has issued new guidelines for submitting criminal investigations to his office, effective immediately.

The ACC has been directed to prioritise cases involving public funds and interests, such as the MMPRC corruption scandal, misuse of state funds during the COVID-19 pandemic, state-owned enterprises (SOEs), and irregularities in the Gedhoruveriya and Binveriya housing schemes.

Recently, the PG Office voided agreements with former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb and SOF leaders in the MMPRC case and instructed the Police and ACC to reopen investigations into related issues. Investigations into housing allocation irregularities in Gedhoruveriya and Binveriya have also been ordered.
