Ministry of Islamic Affairs has launched an inquiry into a video circulating on social media that depicts inappropriate conduct inside a mosque. The incident has drawn widespread attention, prompting swift action from the authorities.
Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, announced via X (formerly Twitter) that the Ministry is addressing the matter under the Religious Unity Act (Act No. 6/94). The Act, designed to safeguard Islamic values and maintain religious harmony in the Maldives, empowers the Ministry to take action against actions that undermine or disrespect Islamic sanctity.
Dr Shaheem confirmed that the Ministry is thoroughly reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident and will take appropriate measures to regulate the use of mosque spaces and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
The Religious Unity Act allows legal consequences for activities that contravene Islamic principles or disrupt religious unity. Such incidents are treated with seriousness to preserve the sanctity of mosques and ensure their role as spaces for worship and reflection.
