President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the Maldives' strong ties with China, calling it the country’s closest partner. The remarks were made during a meeting with China’s Foreign Minister and high-ranking official Wang Yi, who visited the Maldives on Friday.
A statement shared by China’s State Council stated that President Dr Muizzu expressed respect for the longstanding friendship between the two nations and emphasised the Maldives’ commitment to strengthening this bond. The statement noted the President's shared vision for collaboration in various areas, describing it as a foundation for future development.
The President also praised China’s efforts in promoting global peace and expressed a desire to work closely with China to uphold peace and justice in the region.
According to the President’s Office, discussions during the meeting included seeking China's support in agriculture and fisheries, key sectors for the Maldives’ economic growth. In response, Wang Yi assured that Chinese companies would expedite ongoing projects in the Maldives, as per the President's request.
The meeting underscores the Maldives’ commitment to deepening its partnership with China across multiple sectors while fostering regional cooperation.
