The first sitting of this year’s parliamentary session is scheduled take place on February 6 at 0900hrs at the Parliament.
Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla has scheduled the session, during which President Dr Mohamed Muizzu will deliver the annual Presidential Address at the opening ceremony. The Speaker will formally invite the President to address Parliament, as required by Article 84 of the Constitution.
The Constitution mandates that the President’s annual statement outline the current state of the nation and present policies to address its challenges. Once the presidential address is delivered, the session will be concluded.
In accordance with parliamentary rules, the response to the presidential address must be prepared by the largest parliamentary party not aligned with the President. The response must be delivered in Parliament within 14 days of the address.
Parliament had adjourned on December 12 following the completion of its last session and will resume with this significant opening event.
