Parliament is set to hold an out-of-session meeting next week to decide on appointments to the Election Commission (EC). The meeting, scheduled for January 16, will focus on approving two nominees proposed by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to fill vacant seats in the EC.

The vacancies arose after Parliament removed former EC Vice President Ali Nashath and member Mohammad Asif on November 25, following the passage of a related bill.

President Dr Muizzu has put forward two nominees - Mohamed Zahid and Abdul Rahman Salah Rasheed - for Parliament’s approval.

The Parliamentary Committee on Independent Institutions has reviewed their criminal records and conducted interviews with the nominees. The committee will now present its findings and decision to the Parliament during the upcoming session.
