President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the Government would earmark funds for the reclamation project in the 2026 budget, with the construction of row houses set to begin the following year upon completion of the reclamation efforts.
He made these remarks while addressing the residents of Kan’duhulhudhoo Island during his visit to several islands in Huvadhu Atoll on Wednesday.
As such, the President emphasised that the Government’s top priority for 2025 would be housing projects and highlighted specific housing issues on the island. He stated that additional housing units could only be constructed after land reclamation, making it unlikely for the project to commence within the year.
However, he conveyed that the Government would earmark funds for the reclamation project in the 2026 budget, with the construction of row houses set to begin the following year upon completion of the reclamation efforts.
The President also assured that discussions with the relevant authorities would be initiated to address the challenges faced by various regions of the Maldives, including Kan’duhulhudhoo, in transferring patients to Malé City via sea ambulances. These discussions will commence upon his return to Malé following the completion of his tour of the islands.
Emphasising the importance of sporting activities on the island, the President pledged to develop the futsal stadium, renew the turf on the football pitch, and ensure the pitch is suitable for athletics activities as well.
