China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC) has been awarded the contract to construct roads and municipal buildings in K. Gulhifalhu under contractor financing.

The agreement was signed at a ceremony held at the President's Office, with Housing and Infrastructure Minister Dr Abdulla Muththalib representing the Maldives. The event was attended by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef, and several key ministers, including Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed, Finance Minister Moosa Zameer, and Environment Minister Thorig Ibrahim.

Minister Dr Muththalib highlighted that the agreement stemmed from discussions between President Muizzu and CMEC during his official visit to China. He added that extensive technical evaluations and negotiations had been carried out before finalising the contract.

CMEC Regional Manager Qian Houjin expressed pride in CMEC's ongoing role in the Maldives' development, noting their 14 years of experience in implementing projects in the country.

Under the agreement, CMEC will execute the following projects:

  • Establishing an electricity distribution network
  • Developing water and sanitation facilities
  • Setting up a dewatering system
  • Modernising roads
  • Installing a ducting system
  • Building a gas storage and distribution system
