An application has been submitted against two police officers in connection with the death of Adam Athuhar, who died in hospital after attempting suicide while in police custody. Athuhar was being held in connection with violence against a woman, which occurred in September 2024.
On September 2, 2024, Athuhar was in police custody at Dhoonidhoo Jail when his condition worsened, and he was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of IGMH. He died on September 3, 2024. The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) launched an investigation into his death and has since requested the Prosecutor General's office to register a case against the two policemen involved, though further details have not been disclosed.
Police initially reported that the post-mortem examination suggested that Athuhar had died from dengue, but declined to release additional information, citing ongoing investigations by the National Integrity Commission and HRCM.
Athuhar had been arrested after an incident where he allegedly attacked a woman with a knife, resulting in her head injuries. He was later taken into police custody. According to reports, Athuhar had a history of criminal activity and drug use, and he was involved in a dispute with his girlfriend over money.
On the evening of September 2, police found Athuhar lying in a pool of blood in his cell. He was transported to IGMH 23 minutes later but died the following day. CCTV footage showed Athuhar initially standing in the cell, but he was found unresponsive about 30 minutes later.
The investigation into his death is ongoing, with the HRCM continuing to look into the circumstances surrounding his suicide attempt and subsequent death in police custody.
