Maldives Meteorological Service has issued an orange alert for regions from Baa Atoll to Thaa Atoll, warning of rough weather, heavy rainfall, and potential thunderstorms over the next four hours. This cautionary alert comes as the country experiences heavy monsoon rains, linked to a low-pressure system near southeast Sri Lanka.
Heavy rains and high tides have already caused flooding in seven islands, including Sh. Narudhoo, R. Inguraidhoo, F. Nilandhoo, F. Magoodhoo, ADh. Maamigili, Dh. Kudahuvadhoo, and Dh. Meedhoo.
According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Narudhoo has been the worst affected, with 12 houses flooded and property damaged. In Mamigili, several homes have also sustained damage.
The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has been deployed to assist with water removal operations. The NDMA has confirmed that no loss of homes or need for humanitarian assistance has been reported so far.
Residents are urged to remain cautious as the weather conditions persist, particularly with the New Year holidays approaching. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and respond to the needs of affected communities.
