National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an advisory warning of severe weather conditions in the Maldives from January 1 to 5, 2025. The National Meteorological Service predicts heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, strong winds, rough seas, and potential flooding due to a low-pressure trough linked to a vortex forming southwest of Sri Lanka.
Residents are urged to take precautions to protect themselves and their property. Recommended measures include:
- Using sandbags or barriers to prevent flooding in homes
- Relocating food supplies and appliances to higher, safer locations
- Securing roofs and fastening loose items to avoid wind damage
- Turning off and unplugging electrical appliances when not in use
- Checking weather updates and ensuring safety measures before sea travel
- Stocking up on essential supplies to prepare for shortages
NDMA has advised everyone to remain vigilant and take proactive steps to minimise risks during this period.
