An earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale struck approximately 912 kilometres from Malé City on Monday, the Maldives Meteorological Service reported.

The quake occurred at 1338hrs. and poses no threat to the Maldives, according to the Met Office. Addu Atoll, the closest Maldivian territory to the Carlsberg Ridge, was not affected.

The Carlsberg Ridge, the nearest tectonic plate to the Maldives, has experienced minor earthquakes on several occasions in the past. Authorities have reassured the public that the event will not impact the country.
