The Speaker of Parliament, AbdulRaheem Abdulla, is set to visit India next February at the invitation of the Speaker of the Indian Parliament, Shri Om Birla.
In a letter sent to the Indian Parliament, India's Minister of State for External Affairs, Meenakshi Lekhi, stated that AbdulRaheem is scheduled to make a trip to India from February 10th to 14th next year.
She made this statement in response to a question raised by Lok Sabha regarding interactions with parliaments of other countries under India's 'Neighborhood First' policy, which prioritizes relations with neighboring countries.
Lekhi said that under the Neighborhood First policy, India has been strengthening ties by sending parliamentary members to neighboring countries and hosting them in India over the past years.
In the letter, Lekhi mentioned that the visit of the Parliament Speaker and a parliamentary delegation to India next February is at the invitation of the Speaker of the Indian Parliament.
This will be Nasheed's first official visit to India since assuming the position of Parliament Speaker.
Previously, in his capacity as Parliament Speaker, Nasheed has made trips to China and Geneva.
No details about this upcoming trip have been disclosed by the People's Majlis yet.
