Police have started investigating allegations of forgery against Mohamed Fazeel Rasheed, the Deputy Managing Director of the Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC).
The case involves a complaint that Fazeel presented a false document to claim he had received land under the government's landlord scheme.
The investigation began after a tip-off and is focused on the possibility of forged documents.
In connection with the case, police visited the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), and MWSC has suspended Fazil from all duties and prevented him from leaving his office. However, Fazeel reportedly stayed at his office on the day of the suspension.
Along with Fazeel's suspension, all HDC board members except Chairman Ahmed Nasif have been suspended.
Fazil had submitted a document to HDC in June, requesting permission to build a wall on a plot of land. The document claimed to be the land’s registry, but it was sent to the Housing Ministry for verification. It was found that Fazil was not eligible for land under the scheme.
A letter from the Housing Ministry, which was shared on social media, confirmed that neither Fazeel nor another individual, Abdul Majeed Mahir, had applied for land under the scheme.
The investigation is ongoing.
