Japan has donated equipment worth USD 7.6 million to the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Coast Guard to enhance its maritime search and rescue capabilities.

The equipment was officially handed over on Monday, at a ceremony attended by Japan’s Ambassador to the Maldives, Takeuchi Midori, and the Maldives’ Defence Minister, Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon, who accepted the donation on behalf of the MNDF.

Ambassador Takeuchi Midori expressed Japan's ongoing commitment to supporting the Maldives in strengthening its maritime operations, emphasising the importance of international cooperation for safer seas and regional security.

Defence Minister Ghassan Maumoon thanked Japan for its generous support, stating that the new equipment would significantly improve the Coast Guard's ability to respond quickly and effectively to maritime emergencies.

This donation will enhance the Maldives’ search and rescue efforts, help safeguard lives at sea, and ensure the safety of vessels operating in its waters. Japan and the Maldives have a strong, long-standing relationship based on mutual respect, with Japan supporting the Maldives in areas such as disaster management, environmental conservation, and education.
