Heavy rains have caused severe flooding in N. Henbadhoo, Maldives, with the island experiencing continuous rainfall since 0600hrs.

Water has flooded 70 percent of the homes in the island. Abubakr Mohamed, the President of Henbadhoo Council, said that the local authorities are working with the MNDF and police to pump water out of the homes and roads.

While it’s too early to know the full extent of the damage, some furniture and belongings have reportedly been ruined. Usually, only four areas of the island are affected by floods, but today, the entire island is flooded. In some places, the water level has reached three feet, while in others, it’s about one foot high.

The flooding has also affected the waste management centre, making it unusable. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reported that 75 houses were damaged, and the MNDF is helping with relief efforts.

The Maldives is currently in its rainy season, with heavy rainfall affecting the country.
