Civil Court has ordered former Attorney General Aishath Azima Shakoor to pay MVR 4.5 million to Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB) over an unpaid loan.
The case involved a loan of MVR 3 million taken under Azima’s name for the purchase of a Platinum Residence flat. MIB alleged that the repayment terms were not fulfilled, leading to the legal proceedings.
In its verdict, the Court nullified an earlier order made in Azima’s absence, citing section 124(a) of the Civil Procedure Code. However, it confirmed that the bank had provided a diminishing Musharaka property financing facility to Azima, and the repayment obligations under the agreement were not met.
The court determined that Azima owed MVR 4,282,514 in outstanding dues and an additional MVR 266,512 as charity. She has been ordered to repay the amount within three months, adhering to a monthly minimum payment schedule.
The Court also stated that MIB’s rights and powers under the loan agreement would remain intact until all dues are cleared and the facility account is closed.
