Ghiyasuddin International School has suspended all classes following a major fire at the Housing Ministry building nearby, which has led to heavy smoke engulfing the area.
The fire reportedly started early in the morning, around 0630hrs, on the first floor of a tin-structured section on the building’s western side. Fortunately, the building was unoccupied at the time.
School authorities promptly informed students and parents about the suspension of classes as a safety measure.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu visited the site to assess the situation, accompanied by other officials. Police evacuated nearby residents and cordoned off the area, halting public access to ensure safety.
The building houses the office of Housing Minister Dr Ali Haidar Ahmed on the second floor, along with the Ministry’s IT section. Emergency teams are working to contain the blaze, and efforts to prevent it from spreading to surrounding buildings are ongoing.
