Over the past year, the Government has made significant strides in tackling the nation’s drug problem, according to President Mohamed Muizzu. Speaking to residents of AA. Rasdhoo, President Dr Muizzu highlighted key achievements of his administration, including the removal of drugs worth MVR 1.3 billion from circulation.

President Dr Muizzu revealed that 655 kilograms of illegal drugs had been seized and disposed of in the past year. Additionally, 153 foreign nationals involved in drug-related crimes were arrested and deported—more than double the figure recorded in 2023.

He emphasised that efforts to cleanse the police force of corruption have been effective, ensuring there are no officers compromising on drug cases. Over 13,000 premises suspected of harbouring drug activities were searched during this period, reflecting the government’s commitment to rooting out drug-related crime.

President Dr Muizzu expressed confidence in the new drug law currently under parliamentary consideration. He believes the legislation will enable greater collaboration with the public to resolve this longstanding issue and protect communities across the Maldives.

The Government’s actions mark a robust approach to combating the drug menace and demonstrate a clear intent to create a safer and healthier environment for all Maldivians.
