President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has disclosed that the previous government released 1,900 criminals in the lead-up to various elections.

During his visit to AA. Thoddhoo, the President shared details of these releases, stating that 429 criminals were freed before the presidential election, 458 before the council elections, and 762 prior to the parliamentary elections. Additionally, 256 convicts were released in 2022.

In contrast, President Dr Muizzu highlighted that his Administration has so far released only 86 convicts. He emphasised that unlike the previous government, his Administration has not released inmates for political reasons in the run-up to this year’s parliamentary elections.

Instead, his Government aims to offer jailed individuals opportunities for rehabilitation and to participate in Government projects, helping them acquire skills for reintegration into society upon their release, he said.
