The Maldives' upcoming National Service Programme aims to provide opportunities for young people and curb the number of children on the streets, according to Education Minister Dr Ismail Shafiu.
Speaking at the official inauguration of the CHSE building in Male’, Minister Shafiu emphasised that the program, launching next year, will offer military training for students who are unable to pursue higher education after completing their O-levels. Graduates of the program will be eligible for employment in the military or police.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced the initiative during the recent Victory Day function, outlining it as an alternative pathway for youth who may otherwise struggle with limited options. Minister Shafiu highlighted that these efforts align with the President's vision of guiding youth toward productive careers and helping the country advance.
In addition to the National Service Programme, the Ministry of Education has significantly increased A-level opportunities in the Maldives. Enrollment in A-level education has surged by 77% nationwide, with Male' alone seeing a 109% increase.
The program has also expanded to 23 schools in the atolls, providing more students with A-level education locally, which has led to a 50% increase in enrollment in these areas. This initiative has helped raise the number of A-level students by 38% overall, contributing to better educational accessibility for students throughout the Maldives.
