Inguraidhoo MP Ibrahim Falaah has stated that the People's National Front (PNF), founded by former President Abdullah Yameen, has not won an election, lacks the support of the people and now has less than 3,000 members.

Falaah, who is also the Parliamentary Group (PG) leader for ruling PNC stated that these are reasons why PNF should be dissolved.

Speaking at the debate on the amendment to the Political Parties Act, Falaah, who previously worked as a close associate of President Yameen when he ran the PPM, said political parties should be made to earn revenue for their electoral victories.

While 10 political parties have been registered with the Election Commission, only five political parties are represented in the Parliament, he noted.

He further highlighted that, in the last parliamentary elections, President Yameen's PNF contested all the seats but did not win a single seat, he said.

"They have contested by-elections in secrecy too, facing defeat once again. Even I can bring out 3,000 members, from Raa Atoll itself. But if the membership does not increase even after 10 years, then we should not be calling that a political party," he said.

Falaah said there was no problem with having 3,000 members to start a political party.

He also noted that while there is a lot of alleged support for President Yameen, the party now has less than 3,000 members. Therefore, he said, the law should be amended to dissolve parties that do not reach the number of members within a certain period after setting a certain period for adding members to the party.

"For example, 3,000 members within the first two years, and then to meet at least 5,000 to 6,000 members in the next year and so on. These numbers should be defined, and if not reached, the party has to be dissolved," he stated.

Falaah said the Bill should be passed in the committee stage and a decision should be taken on the inclusion of political parties in the committee stage to add members to the party within a specified period.
