President Dr Mohamed Muizzu outlined a vision to strengthen the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and enhance national security. He pledged significant developments in operational capacity, infrastructure, and training for the armed forces, underscoring the government’s commitment to sovereignty and independence.
President Dr Muizzu announced a nationwide youth training programme and detailed plans for expanding the Girifushi training centre, which serves as the primary training facility for the MNDF. As part of this expansion, 13 hectares of land will be reclaimed on Girifushi Island, which will also undergo shore protection and the construction of a new port. This expansion, he explained, is aligned with the government’s New Policy Initiatives to build a more resilient defence infrastructure.
Investing in the capacity of the armed forces, the President promised to modernise weaponry and essential equipment, revealing that discussions with allied nations are underway to support this expansion. A portion of next year’s budget has already been allocated for arms procurement, reflecting the administration’s focus on building a well-equipped, technologically advanced force. He highlighted the addition of an Air Corps and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to the MNDF, enabling enhanced surveillance of the Maldives’ economic zone and improving overall security.
The President further praised the induction of the Special Boat Squadron as part of the Coast Guard’s strengthened capabilities. He shared that the Coast Guard fleet will soon double in size, with Kandu Oy Giri now under full Coast Guard jurisdiction. The President reaffirmed his commitment to securing international assistance to fortify MNDF stations nationwide, enhancing their preparedness and ability to confront emerging challenges.
President Dr Muizzu’s pledges mark a notable shift towards greater self-reliance in national defence, with a focus on youth training, strategic partnerships, and substantial investment in the Maldivian military’s operational capacity.
