President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has revealed plans to amend the Maldives’ Penal Code to enhance investigations into corruption and illicit enrichment.
In a post on his official X account, President Dr Muizzu outlined changes to section 515, which criminalises illicit gains, allowing investigations into a wide range of public officials, including Cabinet members, Members of Parliament, judges, and civil employees, past and present.
This reform aligns with the President's commitment to building a transparent, accountable government. By broadening investigative powers, the administration aims to address corruption at all levels and improve public trust. Despite some concerns about potential misuse, the administration maintains that the amendments will solely serve to protect public resources and uphold the law.
These legal reforms represent a significant step towards greater integrity in Maldivian governance, reinforcing the President’s stance on tackling corruption across all strata of society.
