Attorney General Ahmed Usham has said that he will propose an amendment to the Constitution to set the start of presidential terms on November 11.

At a press conference held at the President's Office today, Usham announced some of the amendments the government wants to bring to the law.

"We intend to propose an amendment to the Constitution to determine the start date of the presidential term on November 11. This amendment requires a public referendum to bring the amendment, hence it will take some time," Usham said.

Maldives celebrates 11th November as its Republic Day, to commemorate Maldives becoming a republic for the second time in 1968. Along with being Republic Day, once in every five years, this day also marks the oath taking of the country's new president, marking the start of their presidential term.

Former President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayoom was however sworn in on November 17, 2013 after the Supreme Court annulled the first round of the 2013 presidential election. Since then, the term of office has been counting since November 17th.

Usham said the government would also introduce an Asset Recovery Bill, a Bill to define the territory of the Maldives, an amendment to the recall vote of MPs and amendments to the system of governance.

The amendments were initially proposed at once but it has now been decided to do so in three phases as some of the Bills require public consultation and many stages, he said.
