Home Minister Ali Ihsan disclosed that the company contracted to build police stations on various islands during the previous MDP administration has invested in 'Big' Company and is constructing a building in Moonimaage.
The minister made this statement in response to Inguraidhoo MP Ibrahim Falah’s inquiry about the progress of the former government’s Indira Project to establish police stations across the Maldives. MP Falah noted that although 15% of the project’s funds were released, there appears to be no visible work.
Minister Ihsan explained that the project initially fell under the Economic Ministry during the MDP government, but by 2021, it was transferred to the Maldives Police Service as part of a USD 60 million initiative to construct police stations on 60 islands, funded by India’s Exim Bank. Despite documents indicating that the project was underway, no actual progress has been seen.
According to the minister, the Indira Project’s joint venture company requested an upfront payment of 15% of the loan. The MDP government provided USD 3.6 million (15% of the loan) to the company. However, no physical evidence of project work exists, and funds remain with the company. Upon further investigation, the ministry found that the company had purchased shares in 'Big' Company and is now constructing a building in Moonimaage
