The Housing Ministry announced on Monday that the list of recipients for the 4,000 housing units under the 'Gedhoruveriya' scheme will now be released in November, postponing from the previously promised release date this month.
These 4,000 units, the first under the ‘Gedhoruveriya’ social housing project initiated by the previous administration, are currently being developed in Hulhumale’ Phase II by Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC).
The initial list of flat recipients, published in the final days of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) administration, was reviewed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), which halted the issuance of flats pending an investigation. The ACC ultimately cleared the Housing Ministry to move forward in February, and the Ministry has been reassessing the list over the past seven months. In July, Housing Minister Dr. Ali Haidar informed a parliamentary committee that the list would be available in October.
However, in a statement on Monday, the Housing Ministry indicated that additional time is needed to complete the evaluation of applications. The Ministry now aims to release the list "before the end of the second week of November."
The government has faced increasing public pressure over delays in handing over flats, leading to a series of protests in Malé. The original recipient list for the initial 4,000 units attracted 325 complaints, with the ACC finding that 59.6% of recipients did not meet eligibility requirements.
During his 2023 presidential campaign, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu assured that he would uphold the original list, ensuring flats are allocated to rightful recipients. In September, FDC’s Managing Director, Hamdhan Shakeel, stated that the corporation anticipates completing the project and delivering the final units by July of next year.
