The Maldives Police Service has confiscated more than 1,000 beer cans and over 100 bottles of alcohol from a safari boat off the coast of GDh. Gadhdhoo, following a tip-off about the illegal possession and sale of alcohol.

The operation, conducted by the Narcotics Intelligence Unit in collaboration with the Gadhdhoo Police Station, led to the seizure of 1,224 beer cans and 124 bottles of alcohol, now secured in police custody.

Two individuals were arrested in connection with the operation, though both have since been released after questioning. The case remains under active police investigation.

During a press conference on Tuesday, Commissioner General of Customs Fathimath Dhiyana addressed concerns regarding the regulation of alcohol on safari vessels. She noted that efforts are underway to ensure that alcohol distributed to safaris by Customs complies with all relevant regulations. Dhiyana also disclosed that six safaris have recently been fined for breaching these rules and are under investigation.

Home Minister Ali Ihusan further emphasised that while safaris are authorised to possess alcohol for tourism purposes, authorities have received reports of some safaris illegally selling alcohol to locals. Minister Ihusan warned that any safari found violating its permit would face the strictest penalties available under the law. He stressed that the government is committed to curbing the illegal sale of alcohol in the Maldives, vowing to take action against those who abuse their permits.
