Vice President Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef emphasised the Maldives' strong commitment to promoting good governance and democratic norms during the Executive Session of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).

He highlighted that democracy, human rights, peace, tolerance, and respect for diversity are essential pillars for thriving societies, fostering understanding and reinforcing the rule of law and good governance.

The Vice President also underscored the Maldives' dedication to building a robust democratic system, evidenced by the successful completion of four cycles of free and fair elections—presidential, parliamentary, and local council.

He expressed gratitude to the Commonwealth Secretariat for its vital role in election observation and proposed strengthening the Commonwealth’s electoral support through training for election officials, developing a comprehensive plan for a whole-of-election-cycle approach, expediting election observation reports, and providing technical assistance for implementing recommendations from observer groups.

Additionally, he reaffirmed the government's commitment to engage with the Commonwealth in strengthening democratic institutions.

Currently, the Vice President is leading the Maldives delegation at CHOGM 2024 in Samoa.
