Homeland Security Minister Ali Ihusaan has said that the death penalty will be enforced as soon as the rules and preparations are completed.

Speaking at a press conference at the President's Office today, Minister Ihusaan said the next step is the enforcement of the death penalty.

"Next is the enforcement stage, and for that we require formulating the regulations and policies as well as train the relevant personnel and designate a specific venue for it as well. We can safely assure that this would be introduced as per the announcement," he said.

The Minister further added that since the punishment is irreversible, there are several factors that need to be thoroughly considered and adhered to through the judiciary to ensure due diligence.

Previously the minister revealed the state intended on implementing the death penalty, but was looking into all the necessary aspects prior to the implementation. He also assured that the implementation of the capital punishment will not breach the laws.

The last time the death penalty was carried out in the Maldives was in 1953.
