Defence Minister Ghassan Maumoon has affirmed that the Maldives will maintain full control over its military affairs, with no foreign interference.
Speaking to PSM during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s ongoing visit to India, Ghassan emphasised that the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) will safeguard the country's independence and sovereignty, in line with the wishes of the Maldivian people.
He clarified that the agreements signed during the visit to India focused on enhancing the capabilities of the MNDF, strictly according to the needs and preferences of the Maldives. He stressed that no part of these agreements involved India influencing the Maldivian armed forces.
"Currently, everything in the military sector is under full control of local authorities. There is no external influence, military or defensive. This is my assurance to the people," Ghassan said.
He further stated that no foreign troops would be stationed in the Maldives, aligning with President Muizzu's "Maldives First" policy. Ghassan also highlighted the government’s commitment to strengthening the MNDF's capabilities, particularly in the field of hydrography.
