Maldives and India have decided to start talks on establishing a Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
In a joint statement issued after he met with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu this afternoon, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the visit would further strengthen bilateral relations and initiate talks on an FTA.
PM Modi also stated that India will continue to provide all possible support for the progress and prosperity of the people of Maldives.
"To strengthen our economic ties, we have decided to initiate discussions on a Free Trade Agreement. We will also work on trade settlements in local currencies. We will also work together in the fields of oceanography and blue economy.," Modi said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said climate change is a challenge facing both countries and India is ready to work with the Maldives on solar and energy efficiency.
"As a neighbor of the Maldives, India is always looking to be the first country to reach out to the Maldives to overcome various disasters and diseases," Modi said.
The President began his visit to India yesterday at the invitation of Indian President Droupadi Murmu. He will return to the Maldives on Thursday.
