The Indian RuPay card has officially been launched in the Maldives during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s two-day visit to India.

Before the joint press statement by President Dr Muizzu and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the first RuPay transaction in the Maldives was showcased. The inaugural transaction took place at a shop in Authentic Maldives, marking a milestone in the digital payment landscape between the two countries.

In the joint statement, Prime Minister Modi also announced that India’s Unified Payment Interface (UPI) system will be introduced in the Maldives soon. An MoU has already been signed to facilitate the launch of UPI, which was first introduced in India in 2016 and has since revolutionized digital payments in the country.

With the launch of RuPay, Maldivians will now have access to the RuPay network through ATMs, point-of-sale (POS) machines, and other digital payment channels. RuPay functions as both a debit and credit card payment system, further strengthening financial connectivity between India and the Maldives.

These initiatives underscore the growing economic and technological collaboration between the two nations.
