Jumhooree Party (JP) leader, Qasim Ibrahim, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Maamigili constituency, has emphasized the significance of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's visit to India in strengthening relations between the Maldives and India.

In a post shared on X today, Qasim noted that cooperation between the two countries is crucial not only for their individual stability but also for the security and stability of the broader Indian Ocean region. He added that stronger ties between the Maldives and India would lead to social development and enhanced regional collaboration.

"There is no doubt that this visit is an opportunity to engage with India's Prime Minister and further strengthen our relationship," Qasim stated.

As the leader of the Jumhooree Party, he expressed his hope that President Dr Muizzu would take the lead in enhancing Maldives-India relations.

President Dr Muizzu departed for India yesterday at the invitation of Indian President Droupadi Murmu. The President's Office announced on Friday that during this visit, the President will hold meetings with Indian President Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and other senior officials to discuss ways to bolster bilateral ties.

Upon his arrival in India, President Dr Muizzu met with Maldivians living in New Delhi. During the meeting, he expressed his commitment to making New Delhi a key hub for Maldives-India relations. He also mentioned that the upcoming two to three days would be crucial in achieving beneficial outcomes for both nations.

In an interview with The Times of India, President Dr Muizzu reiterated his dedication to maintaining strong ties with India and ensuring regional stability.

"We are confident that our relations with other countries will not compromise India's security. Strengthening our relationship with India will remain a top priority," the President emphasized.

He also acknowledged that the key concerns between India and the Maldives have been addressed, and both nations will now prioritize defense cooperation. President Dr Muizzu added that development initiatives would be pursued with a unified vision shared by both countries.

"In these times of global challenges, regional conflicts pose a threat to the security of all nations. Therefore, strengthening cooperation is vital for the security of the Indian Ocean region," he stated.

President Dr Muizzu is expected to return to the Maldives on Thursday, concluding his three-day state visit to India.
